Vollara air
purification products use a variation of technology originally developed in
cooperation with NASA to remove airborne pathogens.
The original
technology was applied to plant growth experiments on the International Space
Station. One of the challenges was that plants naturally release Ethylene gas
as they grow. This gas builds up in enclosed spaces causing plants and fruit to
mature and ripen prematurely; it even accelerates decay.
Researchers at
the NASA Commercial Space Center at the University of Wisconsin found that
ultra-thin layers of titanium dioxide exposed to ultraviolet light converted
ethylene into carbon dioxide and water -- substances that are good for plants.
Subsequently,
NASA researchers developed a coating technology to design an ethylene scrubber.
This first-generation ethylene scrubber was used effectively inside a
plant-growth unit, which grew potato plants during a space shuttle mission in
1995.
Scientists have
continued to refine this technology for applications including further plant
experimentation aboard the International Space Station.
